Charity Cycling
As part of the lead up to the London Olympics in 2012, England rugby international and World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio and England cricket legend Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff undertook the ride of their lives and Dr Leyland joined them for the third of the 5 stages.
Spanning across the 22 days, The Dallaglio Flintoff Cycle’s Slam 2012 supported by Virgin Media kicked off on St George’s Day from the international birth place of The Olympic Games, Olympia in Greece. The journey was through Italy, across the Swiss Alps and through France before reaching London on the 18th of May.
Dr Leyland successfully raised over £8,100 and cycled 562 km with a total climb of 6,576m in 5 days from Luca to Aprica in the Italian Alps. It was a tremendous experience cycling with with some amazing people, Lawrence Dellaglio, Freddie Flintoff, Lee Dixon, James Cracknell (with a broken meta tarsal!), Graham le Saux and others. Leila cycled in Freddie’s team for the whole time and was awarded the Blue Jersey top by Lawrence Dellaglio for being best improved cyclist for this stage which was a privilege. The Dallaglio Flintoff Cycle Slam 2012 rasied over two million pounds for Cancer Research UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital .
